A goal in either half was enough to give
visitors Bromley safe passage into the third round of the Setanta
Shield tonight at York Road with Maidenhead edging the game on
chances but unable to get the ball in the net until stoppage time.
Gavin James, making his first start of the season, almost gave
United the lead in the 18th minute when a curling shot was tipped
round the post by Andy Walker, who had an impressive night in goal
for Bromley. It was Chico Ramos' turn to shine seven minutes later
when he made a flying save from Sam Wood, making amends for the slip
which gave Wood the chance to shoot.
Bromley took the lead ten minutes before half time when a cross from
the right found Tutu Henriques in acres of space at the far post,
the former Charlton defender taking his time to apply a lethal
finish to score.
Maidenhead almost equalised ahead of the interval, when one of
several telling crosses from the left by Ronayne Benjamin hit the
bar. The woodwork again denied United on the stroke of half time
when a long shot from Dwane Lee clipped the top of the cross bar.
The second half saw Maidenhead push hard for an equaliser, and with
the introduction of Wes Daly and Manny Williams, a goal looked
likely. Once again it was Walker in the Bromley goal who maintained
his side's lead diving to his right to save one handed when a Dwane
Lee header met an Ashley Smith cross from the right.
Bromley then sealed victory with five minutes remaining when a Wood
cross from the left hit the crossbar and rebounded into the net of
the helpless Grant Cooper.
Maidenhead made sure the scoreline ended a little more accurately
when Williams popped up to score from a Smith free kick. |
