Magpies dig deep to earn a point (16.08.07)

NEWPORT COUNTY 1 (1)

MAIDENHEAD UNITED 1 (1)

The Magpies dug deep to win a hard earned point in South Wales to get their Blue Square South season up and running.  Buoyed up by a four figure crowd Newport dominated the first half, Craig Hughes hitting
the woodwork in the ninth minute before former Welsh international Jason Bowen opened the scoring in the 28th minute finishing a good move which had started in the Maidenhead penalty area.  Despite continuing to pressurize the Maidenhead goal, 'Port had little in the way of chances and as half time drew nearer United began to go forward with increasing confidence.  The equalizer came three minutes short of the break when a superb cross from the right by Errol Telemaque was met at the far post by Manny Williams to score.
After the interval possession was shared equally with the game turning into a midfield battle.  Maidenhead were unable to seriously threaten the Newport goal though, instead it was goalkeeper Chico Ramos' turn
to shine.  With eleven minutes remaining an exquisite chip from Bowen drew a stupendous save from Ramos to tip the ball over the bar at full stretch, and as the final whistle drew near Ramos was again at the ready to block a close range Bowen short to maintain the level scoreline.
