Faced with a four figure crowd and lower
division opposition in a cup tie for the second time this season,
Maidenhead again failed to deliver, collapsing to a 2-0 defeat to
AFC Wimbledon whose profligacy
in front of goal kept the score respectable.
There was little to report in a first half largely devoid of
goalmouth incident. Wimbledon came closest to scoring when a Luke
Garrard shot clipped the top of the crossbar. Maidenhead's best
chance fell to
John Hastings, but his hesitancy when about to go clear allowed
Michael Haswell to make a crucial tackle.
The half time break was put to best use by the Dons, emerging from
the dressing room to win the game with not only two goals in the
opening ten minutes of the second period, but also creating enough
chances to win by a handful of goals. Most of the Dons' attacking
moves stemmed from the strong running down the right wing of Steve
Ferguson, indeed it was his cross in the 50th minute that was met at
the far post by the unchallenged Marcus Gayle who showed all his
experience to bury the ball into the back of the net with a firm
header, his first goal since returning to the Wombles at the start
of
the season. The lead was doubled four minutes later when a high
ball into the penalty area only saw the Maidenhead defence tee the
ball up for Antony Howard who guided a looping header home. The
Dons, urged on by their huge support which was a real credit to
their club, were rampant at this point, swiftly sweeping forward
time and time again to create several gilt edged jobs which only
went unconverted as a result of poor finishing. With Maidenhead
finding nothing in their locker with which to make a comeback the
result never looked in doubt, Wimbledon running out more comfortable
winners than the results suggests. |
