Magpies Clip Wings (17.11.07)

WELLING UNITED 0

MAIDENHEAD UNITED 2 (1)

Goals either side of half time were the catalyst for a hard fought win in Kent to lift the Magpies out of the bottom three on Saturday.

An injury crisis barely left manager Johnson Hippolyte with eleven fit players, and he was forced to name himself as a substitute.  On the pitch this paucity of personnel led to a 3-5-2 formation being adopted with Ashley Smith and Ronayne Benjamin taking the right and left wing back roles respectively.
The hosts dominated a fast paced first half, attacking quickly to keep the Maidenhead defence under pressure.  Left winger Orlando Smith was at the centre of activity and he combined well in the twelfth minute with on loan striker Charles Ademeno whose shot was palmed wide by Louis Wells.  From the resulting corner towering defender Chris Moore shot wide from only yards out.
Welling again let Maidenhead off the hook in the 25th minute when Ademeno missed from point blank range.
The Stripes kept on working hard however and penetrating long balls started to put the Wings on the back foot.  One such ball led to the Magpies taking the lead in the 35th minute.  A Wes Daly pass found Manny Williams.  The tricky striker took the ball to the edge of the penalty area before skilfully wrong footing his defender, then using the time and space to launch a superb shot which flew in at the near post.
Stung by the goal, Welling once again tore into Maidenhead in the time remaining before the break, Dominic Sterling making a well timed tackle to deny a Andrew Pugh an chance, and Daly clearing off the line from player manager Neil Smith from the subsequent corner.
Maidenhead scored the crucial second goal ten minutes into the second half, a delightful Williams flick of the boot putting Dwane Lee through who applied a good finish to score from the left corner of the penalty area.
The Magpies were then able to control the rest of the game, comfortably soaking up any Welling pressure and even coming closet to scoring again when an opportunistic long shot from Williams was pushed wide.
