Magpies turn to pinch point (18.09.07)

MAIDENHEAD UNITED 1 (0)

CAMBRIDGE CITY 1 (0)

In a neat reversal of Saturday's game Maidenhead United earned a point last night with an injury time equaliser from Errol Telemaque.
In a game played in the right spirit from the start, there was little action of note in the first half.  Maidenhead dominated the opening stages, whilst Cambridge grew stronger as the half wore on,  Yashwa Romeo and Neil Midgeley both missing a chance to seriously test the goalkeeper for their respective teams.  Unsurprisingly it was leading scorer Manny Williams who came closest to breaking the deadlock on the stroke of half time, with a trademark jinking run followed by a shot that was deflected wide by a City defender.
The second half continued in much the same vein and a goalless draw seemed to be the best bet until Cambridge capitalised on a lapse of Maidenhead's concentration in the 62nd minute when a corner from the left was met at the far post by Glen Fuff who rose unchallenged to head home.
Stung by the loss of a goal, United tore into their opponents but faced a tough task to beat a determined defence and the impressive figure of Martin Davies in goal.  The former was beaten in the 76th minute when Carl Wilson-Dennis turned his marker in the box only for his shot to be brilliantly parried by Davies who scrambled to his feet and pulled off a similar feet when Williams struck the rebound goalwards.  Three minutes later Williams danced round Davies and shot from a tight angle. The prone keeper was helpless this time but to the dismay of the Magpies the ball hit the crossbar.
As time marched United's luck appeared to have run out but deep in stoppage time Bobby Behzadi charged down the right wing and floated a cross over.  Cambridge could not clear the ball and it ended up at the far post where Telemaque unleashed an acrobatic shot which flew into the back of net allowing all connected with the Magpies to breath a collective sigh of relief.
