Newman avenges opening day defeat (20.10.07)

FISHER ATHLETIC 0

MAIDENHEAD UNITED 1 (1)

A third minute goal from Lee Newman was enough to give Maidenhead victory at Fisher and so avenge their opening day defeat by the Fish.  As valuable as the three points were the game was almost as equally notable for the United's first league clean sheet.
Maidenhead dominated the opening stages of the game so it was no surprise when they took the lead.  A free kick from the right was cleared as far as Grant Cooper on the left hand edge of the penalty box.  The defender threaded a pass through to Newman who applied an exquisite finish to score.
Manny Williams and Dwane Lee then went close to doubling the lead before the home side began to get a foothold in the game, increasing the pressure as half time got closer.  This pressure only produced one goal attempt of note though when Wes Thomas broke clear down the left wing and went for goal.  United keeper Louis Wells was more than up to the challenge of stopping the attacker, perfectly timing his run out of his goal to save well with his legs.
After the break it was Thomas again who came closest to equalising when his header beat Wells only for the ball to ricochet to safety off the goalpost.
The contest then turned into a tense midfield battle with neither side really threatening to score, and after five minutes of stoppage time the referee finally blew his whistle to signal the Magpies' second league win of the season.
