Magpies fight back in vain as Bromley double up (20.11.07)

MAIDENHEAD UNITED  2 (2)

BROMLEY 3 (2)

A first half fight back from Maidenhead proved to be ultimately in vain against a Bromley team who when gifted the lead again were in no mood to give it up.
In contrast to the clubs Setanta Shield meeting a week ago, the game was up tempo from the first whistle, the slippery conditions providing a fair share of thrills and spills to the crowd who braved the elements.
The visitors dominated the first half and it was no surprise that they sealed their superiority with two goals.  The first came in the seventeenth minute when a cross from Gareth Williams on the left was met by the head of the unmarked Gareth McCleary to score from close range.
The lead was doubled in the 34th minute when a Williams free kick was parried by United goalkeeper Louis Wells, and ex Magpie Francis Duku was quickest to react, firing the loose ball into the back of the net.
Maidenhead were handed a life line four minutes later when a powerful Dominic Sterling header just inside his opponents half led to Bromley custodian Andy Walker charging off his line to collect the ball.  As he did so he began to slip out of the area and was left with no option but to release the ball which the waiting Manny Williams eagerly directed into the empty goal.
The comeback was completed in stoppage time at the end of the half, an Ashley Smith free kick being directed by a firm header from Dwane Lee into the corner of the goal.
Unfortunately for the Magpies this hard work was undone only five minutes after the restart, a McCleary cross from the right being misjudged by Wells who was then helpless to stop Sam Wood chipping the loose ball into the empty net.
Maidenhead threw the kitchen sink at their opponents in an attempt to level the scores Williams, Errol Telemaque and Darti Brown all forcing good saves out of Walker.  Walker was beaten just the once, a curling Grant Cooper free kick hitting the post.
