The snow blizzard that enveloped Milton Road,
home of Cambridge City, deprived the spectators that braved the
elements of any real action in
the first half. Both teams battled hard against a biting north and
driving snow which lasted for the whole of the first period, but
could only manage one decent chance each. For Maidenhead an Ashley
Smith corner from the right in the tenth minute found the
unchallenged head of Mark Nisbet at the near post, the effort going
just over the bar. For City a Josh Simpson header was well saved by
Chris Tardif in the United.
After the break the skies cleared and with the wind and slope in
their favour City took charge. Ashley Fuller threatened from the
restart down the left wing, and having spurned one opportunity was
not in the mood to turn down a second in the 49th minute. Having
split the United offside trap, Fuller ran clear then deftly shot
past Tardif inside his near post. Maidenhead tried hard to get back
into the game but provided little in the way of creativity or
inspiration beyond the occasional long shot from Jermaine Hinds.
Cambridge then scored a decisive second with a quarter of an
hourremaining. A corner saw Jack Bradshaw clear off the line but as
Maidenhead looked to clear, Dwane Lee needlessly handballed leaving
the referee with no option but to point to the penalty spot.
Michael Gash dispatched the kick and in the remaining time
Cambridge regularly threatened to add to their total, but only
managed to do so once with three minutes left when Simpson caught
the United defence flat footed again to run through and score.
