Wilson-Denis gives Magpies good vibrations (23.02.08) |
Carl Wilson-Denis finally broke his goalscoring
duck to lay the foundation for a solid victory at Bognor. With a
goal at the beginning of either half, Maidenhead were always on top
in the game but had to withstand a last ditch Bognor barrage to
secure the three points.
With suspensions and injuries limiting his options, Johnson
Hippolyte was forced to introduce a new midfield pairing of Jermaine
Hinds and Dave Clarke, whilst Grant Cooper and Wilson-Denis came
into defence and attack respectively.
The main action of the first half was crammed into a two minute
period on the quarter hour mark. Firstly Clarke put Lee Newman
through with only the goalkeeper Craig Stoner to beat. Newman placed
his shot firmly to the right of the goal only for Stoner to push the
ball round the post at full stretch. From the resulting Ashley
Smith corner Dominic Sterling rose highest to plant a firm header
goalwards but once again Stoner was equal to the effort getting down
well low to his right to clear off the line. With the chants of "Englands'
number 1" ringing in his ears it was soon to be a case of pride
before a fall though, when from the next attack a Wilson-Denis shot
from the edge of the box snuck under Stoner's lumpen frame and into
the back of the net.
Maidenhead doubled their lead within three minutes of the second
half. Once again Smith and Sterling linked up; this time a Smith
free kick from the right was met by a header from the experienced
centre back at the far post which was too good for the Bognor
defence.
Bognor found a way back into the game in the 64th minute when
captain Scott Chamberlain scored the goal of the game. It came from
a neat free kick just outside the penalty area which Chamberlain
struck up and over the wall to score. This gave his relegation
threatened team hope of drawing something from the game and the
remainder of the game saw the United defence under sustained
pressure. However aside from an Alex Haddow effort on the stroke of
full time which hit the bar the Maidenhead lines were cleared
effectively to preserve the season's excellent away record, United
now having won four out of the last five league trips. |
