10 Man Magpies Earn Point (24.10.07)

LEWES 0

MAIDENHEAD UNITED 0

A solid team performance from the Magpies saw them comfortably earn a point at high flying Lewes, despite playing with only ten men for the last third of the game.
Resplendent in all white Real Madrid style kit, United edged the first half, seriously threatening the Rooks goal throughout the first period.  As early as the second minute Mark Nisbet rose clear of the home defence to meet a Dwane Lee corner at the near post with a header which flew across the face of the goal.   Around the half hour mark Maidenhead won a succession of corners sparked initially by a Manny Williams effort that was deflected wide.  Steve Williams in the Lewes goal was beaten from the fourth and final one of these kicks by a Manny Williams header only for a defender to clear off the line.
The home team often looked threatening on the break, hitting some good balls into the penalty area, but despite the presence of new signing Leroy Griffiths up front seemed to lack potency in front of goal.
This fact was underlined ten minutes into the second half when Paul Booth had a great chance when free in the penalty area only to meekly direct his header into the arms of Louis Wells in the Maidenhead number one shirt.
Maidenhead were then dealt a blow in the 64th minute when Errol Telemaque was sent off for two bookable offences.  Although the departure of the right sided midfielder left the Magpies looking unbalanced the pattern of the game remained the same with Lewes continuing to threaten with some rapier like crosses from the right only for their strikeforce to be effectively marshalled by the United back line.
The introduction of the pacy Yashwa Romeo towards the end even gave the travelling supporters a hint of victory, but a goalless draw away at team with only one defeat all season represented a good night's work for the Magpies.
