All Fancy Dress and No Goals (26.04.08) |
Bright sunshine and a carnival atmosphere on
the terraces were the highlights of a turgid end of season game at
Basingstoke which ended goalless.
With neither team having anything to play for, the game resembled a
friendly with both teams show much creative endeavour without
breaking the deadlock.
The lion’s share of opportunities fell to Maidenhead United. After
25 minutes a Richard Pacquette effort was pushed wide of the post by
‘Stoke goalkeeper Nick Jones. With six minutes to go before half
time Pacquette beat Jones only for a defender to deflect his shot
over the bar.
In the second half it was crosses that most troubled Jones as he was
forced to save at full stretch from Tyron Sealy and Gavin James
efforts from the left wing.
The points should really have been sewn up with two minutes to go.
Lee Newman went through one on one with Jones who saved bravely at
Newman’s feet. But the ball fell loose and Newman squared it to
Manny Williams with the goal at his mercy from six yards.
Inexplicably though Maidenhead star player of the season contrived
to hit the bar with his shot so that honours remained even. |
