Telemaque hero as Magpies grab first win (27.08.07)

SUTTON UNITED 2 (0)

MAIDENHEAD UNITED 3 (1)

Relief was the overwhelming emotion on the terraces at Sutton as the Magpies grabbed their first win of the season in an entertaining Bank Holiday game.
Maidenhead were quick out of the blocks scoring from their second attack of the afternoon in the third minute when an Errol Telemqaue corner from the right was floated over to the far post where Grant Cooper was waiting to head the ball into the back of the net,  Buoyed up by the early goal, Maidenhead dominated the early part of the game, Leon Fisher bringing the best out of ex Magpie Phil Wilson in the Sutton goal, and Carl Wilson-Denis finishing a good move with a shot on target.
However the failure to score a killer second goal allowed Sutton back into the game, and they could well have equalised on the stroke of half time only for Craig Tanner to waste a good opportunity by directing his shot straight at Magpies keeper Louis Wells.

Ten minutes after the break Sutton got their goal, a corner from the left by ex Magpie Solomon Taiwo being powered home by the head of John Scarborough.
Maidenhead continued to work hard to retake the lead, forward Lee Newman at the centre of everything, and it was from a run along the byline by the blonde striker that brought the second goal.  Newman cut the ball back from the right into the path of Telemaque who showed great commitment under pressure from a Sutton defender to meet the cross and force the ball over the line with twelve minutes remaning.
Five minutes later and it looked like game over when Manny Williams caught Lewis Gonsalves in possession to put Newman clear of the defence.  Newman carefully rounded Wilson and practically walked the ball in to score.
The final stages were to prove anything but comfortable for the Magpies however when Warren McBean capitalised on hesitation in the Maidenhead defence to allow Ross Montague to reduce the deficit.
