A first half goal from super striker
Manny Williams was enough to give what proved eventually to be a
fairly comfortable passage into the FA Cup first round.
Opponents Hayes and Yeading United, began the game looking every
inch a team that had lost only once in their last eleven outings,
but following an opening burst of dominance by the visitors, it was
the Magpies who slowly asserted their superiority.
The ever dangerous left winger Serge Makofo was the first to test
Delroy Preddie in the HAYU goal with a rasping drive in the 17th
minute, the shot being touched over the bar by Preddie. Preddie was
beaten seven minutes later when an Errol Telemaque corner from the
right was forecfully headed towards goal by Dwane Lee only for a
well placed defender to clear off the line. The all important goal
finally came just short of the half hour mark from the best move of
the game.
Taking a free kick inside his own half, diminutive midfielder Wes
Daly spotted Makofo free on the left wing, and some clever
interaction between the two saw Makofo sprint well clear of the HAYU
defence.
This time Makofo opted to deliver the perfect cross, Williams rising
with salmon like elegance to tower above his HAYU marker and squeeze
his header between the despairing grasp of Preddie and the underside
of the cross bar.
Maidenhead remained on top for the rest of the half, but received a
blow just before the break when Bobby Behzadi was injured. The
second half followed a similar pattern to the first, HAYU racing out
of the blocks but failing to test Louis Wells in the Maidenhead
goal.
Instead it was the HAYU keeper Preddie who was given a chance to
shine pulling out all the stops to keep his side in the game with
some excellent saves from the likes of Lee Newman (twice), Mark
Nisbet and Manny Williams.
Even with six minutes of stoppage time HAYU were unable to come
close to an equaliser, and so Maidenhead made it through to the FA
Cup First Round for the second consecutive season. |
