Impotent Magpies eclipsed by Wings (29.03.08)

MAIDENHEAD UNITED 0

WELLING UNITED 1 (1)

An inability to create chances cost Maidenhead the opportunity to take any credit from this relegation six pointer, with results elsewhere conspiring to send the Magpies into the bottom three.
Maidenhead set the tone of the match early, initiating wave after wave of attacks, none of which seriously troubled Jamie Turner in the Wings' goal.  The visitors scored what proved to be the decisive goal in the twentieth minute.  Quickly counter attacking, Ellis Green ran through the Maidenhead side like a knife through butter before playing a through ball to Sam Gargan who made no mistake in beating Chris Tardif.
Maidenhead's best chance to equalise came four minutes before half when an Ashley Smith corner from the right found its way to Lee Newman.  Newman unleashed a powerful shot which was superbly saved by
Turner only for the ball loose to Dwane Lee with the goal at his mercy.  From point blank range though a deflection and the woodwork was enough to help the ball over the bar.
In the second half Maidenhead set up camp in the Welling half winning set pieces around the penalty area on a regular basis.  With both sets of fans giving terrific support to their teams the stage was set for a
great finish but despite the introduction of taller forwards Carl Wilson-Denis and John Hastings, Maidenhead were unable to pierce the Welling back line save for a Wilson-Denis effort which was ruled out for offside.
