Us strike late to share spoils (29.12.07)

MAIDENHEAD UNITED 1 (1)

SUTTON UNITED 1 (0)

A late goal gave visitors Sutton a share of the spoils in a veritable game of two halves, the game ending in a draw which was of no real use to either side.
Bottom of the table Sutton started the game in defensive mode, playing just one man up front, inviting Maidenhead to attack.  The Magpies did this tentatively at first but grew in confidence as the half drew on, debutant James Hamsher particularly impressing on the left wing.

Despite some good build up play however there was little in the way of chances other than a Dwane Lee shot which was spilled by ex Magpie keeper Phil Wilson in the 21st minute.  Fortunately just as frustration was threatening to creep in Hamsher linked up with Jamal Fyfield on the left, the full back launching a ball into the penalty area which was expertly brought down by Manny Williams.  The nimble striker then slipped the defence to go clear, giving Wilson no chance with a shot that floated into the right hand corner of the goal.
The half time break gave Sutton a chance to regroup, manager Ernie Howe belatedly opting to double his attacking strength.  This move initially looked to have backfired as gaps began to appear in the hitherto solid Sutton backline, a Lee shot being tipped round the post by Wilson within five minutes of the restart.  Williams then missed a golden opportunity to increase the Magpies' lead in the 54th minute when he sprinted clear of the defence to go one on one with Wilson, with John Hastings and Hamsher in support to his left.  Williams opted to go it alone but with the ball trickling out of his reach, his shot was comfortably dealt with by Wilson.
From this point on Sutton gradually increased the pressure on Maidenhead, putting several decent balls into the box which went begging for a lack of a finisher.  Two lengthy delays following nasty clashes of head meant time was plentiful, and when Chico Ramos saved well from a close range Warren McBean shot with two minutes of normal time remaining, the Us sensed a chance to take something from the game.
With time up on the watch a long Wilson clearance eluded the Maidenhead defence but was picked up by Craig Dundas.  Ramos was equal to his first shot but was helpless to stop Dundas scoring from the rebound.  Ten minutes of stoppage time ensued, but although the game opened up at both ends neither side came to close taking all three points, leaving the final score a fair one.
